How to Incorporate Travel Style into your Decor

How to Incorporate Travel Style into your Decor
Rayme Wells

Have you ever looked at someone’s stunning vacation photos on social media and thought, “Wow, that looks amazing! I would love to visit that place!” Or have you returned from an adventure of your own and wanted to recreate that experience in your home, by keeping some special items to remind you of where you have been?

Let’s face it, life can become somewhat routine at times. We can fight the monotony by creating a little oasis within familiar surroundings, to let our minds escape to another place. There is nothing wrong with a little bit of daydreaming! With the perfect espresso machine, you can fill some tiny cups and pretend you are sitting on the patio of a European café!

I have visited some interesting places, but it has been so long now that it would seem like another lifetime if it weren’t for the artwork I keep, reminding me of those places.

I no longer live near the ocean, but I have a collection of seashells to remind me of the smell of seaweed, the call of the gulls, and the way wet sand feels underneath my feet.

I know someone who returned from a vacation in Italy and had one wall in her home painted to match her photograph of an especially memorable view of a sloping vineyard. On a smaller scale, simply adding a colorful collection of Italian Plates to your wall can have you dreaming of Tuscan sunsets, or craving more olives and fresh oregano in your meals.

Where do your daydreams take you? North, south, east or west? Places you once were, or places you long to visit?

If you dream of Africa, imagine your dinner table set with Kenya Chargers, and your sofa draped with some animal print throws. Maybe you crave a few potted palms and some fancy drink umbrellas in your life, to allow you to drift gently into the atmosphere of a warm tropical paradise.

I am certain that kangaroos make terrible houseguests, but you can gaze at a Map of Australia and New Zealand on your wall, and remember that time you traveled to “the land down under.” If you hope to see the Eiffel Tower someday and you want to keep that goal in mind, an elegant Traditional French Bench can keep you sitting pretty until you finally arrive.

As I look at friends’ vacation images of hiking the ruins in Machu Picchu, relaxing on some incredible Maui beaches, and touring the streets of London and Montreal, I think of all the places a person can go in the world — all the sights to see, all the different cultures, music styles, foods, climates, and native wildlife! Even right here in the United States, we have a variety of experiences and landscapes to offer. I have the state of Maine on my mind today.

Of course, I love my life just as it is and would not trade it for anything, but a seashell in my hand always takes me back to another place and time. I am always open to new adventures in our big, beautiful country — and the rest of the world!
