Want to learn how to play a fun outdoor game that’s been around since the Roman Empire?
Sounds like you’re ready to learn how to play bocce ball in your backyard. Just start with these simple rules and guidelines!

What will you need to play bocce ball?

  • Four people
  • A backyard
  • A bocce ball set

How to Play Bocce Ball – Rules & Guidelines

  1. Start with four people and split up into two teams. Pick two captains, one for each team. Then, flip a coin to see which team goes first. Whoever wins the coin toss gets to pitch the pallino (the white ball) onto the field. Try to keep it in the middle of your yard so that there aren’t any obstructions in the field of play.
  2. Now, a player from the other team throws a ball underhand and tries to get it to land as close as possible to the pallino. Since you’re going to play bocce ball on grass rather than on a  court or sand, you should toss the bocce balls instead of rolling them.
  3. This will go back and forth between the teams until both sides are out of balls. You can strategically aim for the other team’s ball in order to get it away from the pallino.
  4. You can tally up the points at the end of each round. However, only the winning team will receive points. The winning team for each round is the team that rolls a bocce ball closest to the pallino. For every ball that they have closer to the pallino than the other team, they get a point. You can play to a pre-arranged total of your choosing.

That’s it! You’re on your way to enjoying one of the best backyard games out there. You can take a bocce ball set with you and play almost anywhere. I’m a big fan of playing at least one game of bocce ball every winter when there’s some hard snow on the ground. It’s fun to mix it up like that. Enjoy the games!
