NFM Cares - Volunteering All Summer Long
Nebraska Furniture Mart’s volunteer program, NFM Cares, has been in full swing this summer!
Staff members from all of our store locations have been rolling up their sleeves and pitching in to help out our local communities. At Nebraska Furniture Mart we are proud to have our team volunteer on the clock and give back to the communities in which we live and operate.
In Omaha, we’ve volunteered in several organizations across town. Several groups this summer have volunteered at Abide Omaha to assist the local non-profit in fixing up their new purchased facility and assisting with home repairs. Volunteers helped by working to install drywall in homes, painting children’s classrooms and helping to sort through donations made to the program. Our staff are proud to know they are helping Abide towards their mission of transforming the inner city of Omaha.
NFM Cares has also volunteered at the Open Door Mission several times this summer. We’ve helped out in the kitchen by working to prep food, serve meals and make sack lunches for those that are not able to make it down during serving hours. We’ve also helped out by volunteering for the organization’s Street Team. The Street Team take sack lunches to parts of Omaha where there are known homeless communities.
In our Kansas City location, volunteers work at Crosslines Community Kitchen in Wyandotte County. Staff volunteer by preparing and serving lunches to over 200 people in need. They focus on providing nutritional meals, they not only want to feed them but they want to make sure they are giving them food to nourish their bodies and sustain them throughout the day.
Hope Builders is another community partner for our KC store. They work hard to provide homeowners regain hope by helping the disadvantaged to maintain or repair their homes. One of our teams of staff spent the day building wheelchair ramps from the ground up. Under the guidance of a project coordinator, staff helped by moving the materials, measuring and cutting the wood, and working together to build a wheelchair ramp for an individual in need. Our volunteers absolutely loved the experience of working with Hope Builders and that it meant so much to them to be able to give back.
In our Texas location, one of our community partners is The Samaritan Inn. The Samaritan Inn serves the homeless community of North Texas by providing a comprehensive program that helps willing people gain dignity and independence.
Our staff volunteer their time by helping to serve lunch in the kitchen. Volunteer Coordinator Candi Greenway says, “Nebraska Furniture Mart’s volunteers all LOVE coming to the Samaritan Inn. Our volunteers love giving back to the communities we are a part of and always return with high emotions. The emotions far outweigh the words.”
We’ve had a lot happening this summer but are very excited for our upcoming event – the annual Tug of War Competition. This competition is held in all of our locations. Staff form teams within their division and compete for the title of “Tug of War Champion.” Teams must provide a donation of at least 100 canned food items that get turned in to a local foodbank to participate in the competition. This is the 5th year that Nebraska Furniture Mart has facilitated this event and our staff take the event very seriously. Last year we added in a dunk tank where staff can donate 5 canned goods for one throw to try to dunk a manager of their choice.
These events happen throughout the day and we even have several of our directors and executives that participate in the events! We use this opportunity as a celebration to appreciate our staff and are holding a cookout. But most importantly, we’ve been able to put together massive donations to our local food banks!
Last year we were able to donate a whopping 15,109 pounds of food between all our store locations combined to donate to local food banks!!
Thank you to all our staff that have volunteered through the NFMCares program and that have donated through the food drive. We are proud to have you on our team and we thank you for helping us to give back to the local communities in which we live and operate!
