Buying an area rug online it may sound like a big deal, but it’s super easy to pick out a rug and feel confident about your choice. NFM has plenty of online options for you to browse and compare at your leisure. So, what should you look for when you’re buying a rug online? Well, here are a couple of steps to help make sure you find the best rug for your home.
1. Match the Style of Your Room
To begin your search, take a look at the style of your room. After all, you don’t want to buy a contemporary rug for a traditional room. Next, you should pick the color you want to try to bring out in your space. What do I mean about that? Well if you have a room featuring teal and brown tones, which one do you want to be the dominant color?
With a coordinating rug, you can add an additional color to your room (like coral or red), but make sure you have some decorative accessories to bring that color out. You want your area rug to bring the space and all of the colors together. The rug should be the finishing touch, so it does take careful thought.
2. Get the Right Size Rug
Now it’s time to pick the size. This can be tricky because it depends on the look you’re going for… Do you want your space to look small or large? Will it be cater-cornered or laid straight? Will the furniture sit on it or right of the edge? Do you want your furniture and room layout to be the same or will they rug change things? These are the major question to think about. Check your room dimensions to make sure you find the right size rug for your space.
A normal size rug measures 5’x7′. That size should be about a quarter of the total square footage of your room, this will give your seating area an intimate but not-too-small feeling if your furniture is sitting right off the edge of the rug. It also allows you to cater corner it without it taking up your whole space.
A 7’x10′ rug is on the larger side. A rug this size should measure to be about half the size of your room’s total square feet. If you place a rug this size in a smaller room, then it could look more like wall-to-wall carpet that got cut short before it met the wall. The point of an area rug is just to cover an “area” not the whole room.
3. Read the Reviews
The next trick to buying an area rug online is read some reviews. They help out a lot in determining if the color will come out right and if it’s true to size and to get layman’s term on the thickness. Most sites will let you know the rug thickness in the description or specs, but if you’re like me you might need someone to tell you how it felt when they walked on it. Everybody’s experience will be different, so I wouldn’t take the reviews as gold, I’d just take them into consideration.
4. Pick Out the Rug Shape
Now all you need to do is find the right rug shape. The shape should be determined by either your decorating style or size of the room. It also depends whether you want your furniture on the rug and how much walk way is left in the other parts of the room. You should have at least 2 feet to spare from the edge of the rug to the nearest wall.
See? Picking out a beautiful area rug is simple! Just follow these easy guidelines to get the perfect rug for your home.
