An Inside Look at Joanna Gaines' Design Style
Joanna Gaines, co-owner of Magnolia Market with her husband Chip, has become the “it” girl in design and decorating. Born in Kansas, and raised in the great state of Texas, Joanna Gaines needs no fixing up.
After graduating from Baylor University with a degree in Communications, she found her passion while interning in New York City. On the streets of the city, hidden in small boutiques, she found beauty in hopeless things. And it was then, that her design philosophy was born. She loves featuring pieces that emit a feel of how life used to be and incorporates them in simple, fresh, and timeless ways.
Although Joanna and her husband both went to Baylor University in Waco, TX, that’s not where their story begins. It all started when they first met in her father’s tire shop. They soon married in March of 2003, and have been remodeling and flipping homes together for the past 12 years.
Their first renovation project was their own fixer upper. It was important for them to preserve the character and charm of the already existing structure like the molding and her now-signature shiplap walls. Joanna has described her design style as “simple, clean, and unexpected.” While Chip has joked that his is whatever it is that his wife likes.
And all of these elements can be found in their new business endeavor Magnolia Home, their furniture and home furnishings line. Her furniture line can be broken down in to numerous style categories, ranging from Traditional, which is a current approach to a time passed; to Boho, which exhibits a unique blend of vintage and eclectic styles.
Her French Inspired collection is all about classic details done in a graceful, natural way, while her Primitive collection is that of basic foundations the hold true through time. But what she is most known for, and probably most indicative of her personal style is her Industrial collection. This assortment is of pieces that are reminiscent of appearances that would be found in factories, warehouses, and on farms. Her furnishings collection also contains a line of rugs, paint, pillows, and accessories.
But this woman is no one-hit wonder. Along with her furniture line is her accessory store, Magnolia, that started it all. It has grown into the Silos, located in Waco, TX, where they recently opened a bakery on the site. Their other businesses include real estate, construction, a design firm, and the Magnolia Villas. Don’t forget about Fixer Upper, their show on HGTV that introduced us all to this amazing couple. And aren’t we glad it did?
