Power Through Your Next Lazy Saturday with These Great Movies
Summer is about spending time with family and friends, grilling out, and eating some delicious food. Sometimes you just want to play catch in the backyard with little Timmy Turner, but then your significant other decides to invite the in-laws over to the house AGAIN, and the dreaded honey do list arrives in your inbox. As much as you want to avoid that honey do list you really can’t. As the motivational meme once said, “Happy wife, happy life.” Big if true! Shout-out to that meme!
As the summer goes on, the days get longer, warmer, and less bearable. To be honest, there are only so many ways to enjoy the outdoors in this heat and some days you just need to avoid it at all costs! If you’re with me, we can call those days a Lazy Saturday! But really any day when the weather is in the upper 90s is a lazy day for me. That’s when I sit back in my favorite part of the couch, with an ice cold drink, a Klondike bar, and my favorite go-to movie. Having a little one has changed my life, I catch myself answering Dora when she asks where the purple crayon is. With that being said, some of my movie choices have to be family friendly.
Talking Twinkies aka Minions
I don’t know what those little yellow things are saying, but I fell in love with them when “Despicable Me” released six years ago! Minions is one of those movies that you have to laugh at because it makes no sense. But oddly enough, my 2-year-old niece knows every line from that movie, even the gibberish. Well, maybe that’s just her way of communicating. Not going to lie, I enjoy it too. The movie is about the Minions trying to become evil servants of an evil leader, but finding one is not as easy as it sounds. This movie is definitely one that the whole family will love.
The Instant Classic – Toy Story
I am Sid! I was a little evil kid growing up breaking all the toys my parents bought me. I used to glue them up, wrap a grocery bag around their shoulders and throw them up at the sky as high as I could to see if the grocery bag would act as a parachute… nine times out of ten, it never worked. My toys never lasted, I wish I was more like Andy growing up. He loved Woody! Woody was a hero in his eyes with his boots, cowboy hat, and cow print vest; you know he was the man in town. Toy Story is one of those movies that takes me back to when I was a little bucktooth kid waking up on a Saturday morning just to watch cartoons.
Cuddle Vibes – About Time
Who doesn’t love a good romantic movie? I am comfortable saying that I saw this in the theaters and walked out in tears. I feel like Rachel McAdams has a way of making me cry (see The Notebook and Mean Girls). About Time is a movie that is about time travel, love and family. But, it just shows what someone would go through to find love. This movie is one you could watch while you cuddle up on the couch with your Bae enjoying a bowl of popcorn, a glass of the finest wine you can find at Baker’s, and your smart home lights dimmed just right to set the right ambiance. if you’re feeling really special, order up a pepperoni pizza and light some candles; that’s the way to my heart.
Lights, Camera, Action – Goodfellas
I don’t know what it was about the ’90s that brought us amazing mafia crime movies like A Bronx Tale, Casino, Donnie Brasco, and my personal favorite Goodfellas. When this movie released I was too young to even watch it, but as time went by and I got older, my old man let me watch it with him. From the first time I saw the scene where Ray Liotta was walking through the kitchen shaking everyone’s hand, I was hooked. What a fantastic movie! This is one of those movies to watch when the kids are with their mom running errands and you have a few hours alone. Enjoy this movie with a cold brew and some nachos. Trust me, it won’t let you down!
In Tears Laughing – Bridesmaids
Who doesn’t want the perfect wedding!? A competition between the maid of honor and someone who is believed to be a best friend, almost derails the entire wedding. Kristen Wiig has finally got her big break in Hollywood by getting a main character role in Bridesmaids. This movie shows you a great behind-the-scenes aspect of what goes on when planning a wedding. One day, when I’m planning my wedding with my other half, I’ll try to remember to not give her so much stress during this spectacular time. I am not making any promises though (sorry Andrea)!
There you have it. My Top Five Lazy Saturday movies. It’s a short list, but I have plenty more where that came from! Can I make this a seasonal blog post? Write my editors in order to make this happen.
If you want to spend time with the kids enjoying movies that you loved when you were a kid, you got it. Want a movie that both you and your significant other will like? Trust me, you’ll love this time travel romance movie. If not, at least you have that bottle of wine that’ll get you through anything! You can’t go wrong with any action movie, plus Joe Pesci is the man! And if you want a light-hearted comedy, Kristen Wiig and crew will have your laughing until your stomach hurts.
Netflix and Chill responsibly.
