Nintendo: Your New Favorite Holiday Guest

Nintendo: Your New Favorite Holiday Guest

Stressed out around the holidays? Looking for something fun to do while you and your family are stuck inside during the bitterly cold days of winter? Fear not blog readers! I’m here with some unconventional advice that just may help you hold onto your sanity this winter.

You may ask, “And what exactly is the answer to a stress-free and fun indoor winter activity?” Well it’s actually quite simple, Nintendo’s newest video game console, the Wii U! You see, the Wii U has something for everyone and when it comes to entertaining guests for the holidays, it just can’t be beat.

Over the years, Nintendo has continued to broaden their audience and produce some of the most innovative, user-friendly, and age-appropriate consoles on the market. There are a variety of games on the Wii U where everyone can participate and have fun no matter their age or experience. If you just want to relax and watch a movie, the Wii U also has access to a variety of streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, and YouTube. In keeping with their history of innovative designs, the Wii U gamepad features an incredible 6.2 inch touchscreen! It can be used during normal gameplay or you can let someone else use the TV while you keep playing on the gamepad.

So there you have it! The holidays shouldn’t be about stress, they should be about bringing people together and nothing brings people together quite like Nintendo. Here’s a list with some of my favorite Wii U games that offer something for everyone in your family.

Nintendo Land (1-5 players)

Released in 2012 as a launch title for the Wii U, this game was designed to showcase the unique controls and gameplay that the Wii U has to offer. The game itself actually consists of 12 mini-games or “attractions” that players can access via a giant virtual amusement park. While each of these games has very unique feel, they all exhibit what makes Nintendo great; extremely fun, innovative, and simple gameplay. Throw in the fact that each one of these games is themed after an existing Nintendo franchise (e.g. The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, etc.) and it’s easy to understand why this addictive title is a must have.

Wii Sports Club (1-4 players)

Calling this title just a HD remake of the popular Wii Sports game is a bit of an understatement. Sure it features the same core sports of the original Wii Sports (bowling, golf, tennis, baseball, and boxing) but the designers really went out of their way to give this game a fresh feel with enhanced graphics, improved controls, and most importantly online gameplay. Now players can share the competitive/ cooperative gameplay with not only friends and family but with players all around the world as well! If you’re looking for an active game that gets everyone involved and off the couch then this is the title for you.

Mario 3D World (1-4 players)

This is the sixth original 3D platformer in the Super Mario series and without a doubt one of the best installments to date. Nintendo has done a great job of building on the franchise’s already awesome gameplay by introducing an all new kingdom to explore. There are also some crazy new power-ups like the Cat Suit and the Double Trouble Cherry that are sure to make each level more chaotic and fun than the last. Play as Mario, Luigi, Toad, or Princess Peach and find out how each character can bring their unique abilities and playing style to the game. Remember, if you’re going to defeat Bowser and save the kingdom, you’re going to have to learn how to work together as a team.

Mario Kart 8 (1-4 players)

Mario Kart 8 takes everything that generations of fans have loved about the series and turns it on its head…literally. Players can now race on almost any surface, at times speeding by competitors while driving upside down! MK8 also expands on the kart customization introduced in Mario Kart 7 and adds 4 additional power-ups that are sure to raise the stakes. If that wasn’t enough to entice you, MK8 also has 2 downloadable content packs on the way that introduce 16 additional courses into the mix along with 4 more vehicles and 6 more playable characters to the racing roster. If you’re a fan of racing and mayhem in general, then this is the title for you.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U (1-4 players)

Not familiar with the Super Smash Bros. series? Well you’re in for a treat! In a nutshell, it’s a crossover fighting game that plays and feels like a love letter directly from Nintendo. Gameplay is very straightforward and consists of multiple Nintendo characters trying to knock each other off of various floating platforms in hopes of becoming the proverbial “king of the hill.” With over 50 playable characters (from some of Nintendo’s greatest titles), 45 stages, multiple game modes, trophies, and online play, this is an absolute beast of a game. If you’re a competitive gamer that longs for the tears of your opponents, then get in the ring and prepare to fight!
